Turf Gallops

Extending to over 2,500 acres, Newmarket Heath provides 50 miles of turf gallops and canters.  The Heath is split in two by the town, Bury Side (to the east of Newmarket) and Racecourse Side (to the west).  Ground on each side is divided into three main categories - Winter (and Yearling) Ground, Spring Ground and Summer Ground.  (Details of specific areas, uses and Opening Times can be downloaded).

As well as including large areas which have been turf since the mid 17th century, the Heath also includes five peat moss gallops, making up a total of 6 miles.  These were introduced at the beginning of the 20th century and, in most years since, thin layers of peat have been spread on certain gallops.  Laid in the autumn, peat is worked in by nature over the winter and today a six inch depth of peat-rich soil exists.  The peat moss gallops produce extra cushioning and a safe, natural surface for fast work when other ground has become too firm. The 9 furlong Watered Gallop which lies adjacent to the Rowley Mile on the Racecourse Side enables trainers to work horses on turf even in drought conditions.

The grass gallops play an important role in the preparation of horses for Group One and Classic races.  On request, the 1 mile 2 furlong Round Gallop on Limekilns can be used in reverse in preparation for racing at Epsom and in the Derby in particular.

Grass gallops and centres are walked and repaired on a daily basis when open. Their location at any particular time is indicated by white markers and horses must stay within these markers. New "fresh" ground is given by moving the markers when appropriate.

In general terms, Winter and Yearling Grounds are open from November through to February. Spring ground is opened in February and March through to April or May. Summer ground (including the Limekilns) and the peatmoss gallops can be opened from May through to October but open and close depending on ground conditions prevaling at the time. (More details can be found at Opening Times and on the Gallops Board).
