Jockey Club Estates’ training facilities at Lambourn include eight gallops and canters with artificial surfaces, totalling over six miles.
Five of the seven all-weather tracks are located on Mandown Gallops. The Long, surfaced with Eurotrack, is 8½f and is the main work gallop for Flat horses. The Back of the Hill, at 8f, was completely refurbished in 2006 and is surfaced with Activ-track, a version of Eurotrack specifically designed for National Hunt training. Whilst used by some Flat horses, the Back of the Hill is predominately the work gallop for National Hunt horses. The Short, a 5½f canter was also refurbished in 2006 and surfaced in Ecotrack. With its steep hill, the 5f Fisher’s Hill (named after the legendary Head Gallopman, Eddie Fisher) is surfaced with Eurotrack and is popular with Flat and National Hunt horses for interval training. Finally, the 3 bay racecourse standard ‘Steriline' starting stalls are situated on a 1f all-weather track.
Also available to trainers using Jockey Club Estates’ facilities on a ‘regular’ basis are the 6f Fibresand off Folly Road, Lambourn, the 7½f woodchip gallop known as Long Hedge to the east of Lambourn and the 8f Polytrack at Kingsdown to the north-west of Upper Lambourn.
Artificial tracks close at 1pm each day to enable Jockey Club Estates staff to maintain them. All tracks are machined at least once a day and many of the busier tracks are machined during the mornings as well to reduce compaction and provide a fresh, level surface. For health and safety reasons, horses are prohibited from entering tracks while a maintenance pass is being carried out. (Details of all-weather surfaces, distances and maintenance times can be downloaded from Opening Times).
